Costs of a Stay at Home Business

without comments

by Elise Harmon

When someone is considering a stay at home business, thoughts of the starting costs may come secondary to the first bursts of entrepreneurial glee. Like any business, a home based entrepreneur will have to endure some pressure on his/her purse strings. Yet launching a small home business will present fewer costs than launching a traditional store front biz.

However unexpected costs may arise if one is not prepared.

It’s difficult to give precise numbers, since these will vary according to country, region, city, etc. Here are some things to consider:

Storage

No more garage storage

No more garage storage

A product based business will require storage for the finished item as well as additional materials necessary for assembly. The basement or garage may start off as the holding area for a home entrepreneur, but as the business takes off the need for larger storage will be necessary.

Security

A storage facility away from the home necessitates security. Automated security may be sufficient but live personnel could also be an option.

Shipping Costs – Drop Shipper

Of course shipping and handling is paid for in some way by the consumer. This must be accounted for when sizing up new business costs. However a business may grow to have a need for a drop shipper. A drop shipper houses materials, processes orders and can do physical mailings. Drop shippers come with fees that vary according to what your needs are.

Materials

A business may grow to include new things within its’ inventory. Let’s say you design monogram cake toppers and suddenly cake toppers with Swarovski crystal comes into vogue. Now the cost of the crystals come into play. Looking to future and thinking about the price of expanding is wise.

Online Costs

I believe any good business should have a solid gameplan for marketing online. A website should be more than an online brochure; it should also bring buying customers or clients to an entrepreneur’s door.

The basics for a online presence will be the purchase of a domain name and web hosting.

After that any website worth a grain of salt will also make use of an autoresponder (aweber.com), a secure place for online products (e-junkie.com), product delivery (clickbank.com), payment processor (paypal.com), and a pdf maker. Most of the following can be purchased as software or can be found with various online providers.

Or an entrepreneur can just have a programmer on standby.

Health Care/Life Insurance

Home business owners must supply their own. Start with e-insurance.com to hunt for rates.

Increase in home bills

Since business is being conducted in the home, some of the basic bills may see a spike due to more usage. For example electricity, internet, gas, all may have an increase

Outsourcing/Home Help

All entrepreneurs will need assistance at some point. The help may be necessary for business related issues, like responding to emails. Or additional assistance may be for completing household chores or errands. Using the time in the morning to devote to the business instead of washing the dishes can make a big difference to an entrepreneur.

The above is a look at what possibly may arise while running a stay at home business. Of course depending on the business, other costs may apply. Before starting any new, do your homework! Research, plan and launch that business with confidence.
